I tell my story to make a few points. First, there is no data to show that runners of any distance have more osteoarthritis or joint replacements than sedentary folks, and may end up with fewer replacements in the long run (pun intended). My personal guess is that OA is more related to genetics and joint injury than activity. Second, judicious running in pain-free times does not make your arthritis worse, but moving away from repeated and high volume impact loading on the joint may extend your cartilage “wear.” Finding alternative low impact activities will help keep you fit. Third, I do not expect to return to running after this joint replacement. Although many of my patients continue to run after replacements, I do not want to have a “redo” for wearing out too early and man-made materials, like the parts in an engine, do wear out.
