This one will get you scratching your head. It's an article that will appear in the British Journal of Sports Medicine , by a team headed by Swedish Achilles tendon guru Hakan Alfredson (if I knew how to put that little circle above the first "a" in "Hakan," I would!). In a nutshell, they took 13 patients with very longstanding Achilles tendon problems in both legs (duration ranging from 6 to 120 months!), and operated on whichever tendon seemed worse. Then they waited. The operation basically involved scraping the affected tendon, a technique that has a reasonably good track record with really stubborn cases of tendinopathy. Overall, the surgery worked pretty well: the pain score on the operated side dropped from an average of 76 to an average of 7.
