Ostfeld has been studying ecological issues in the Hudson Valley since 1992, and his research shows that by counting the number of mice one year, he can accurately predict the number of the cases of Lyme disease the following year. (Ticks pick up the Borrelia burgdorferi Lyme bacteria from small mammals such as mice and birds. Mice, in particular, transmit the disease at high rates.) In counting mice for the region in 2016, Ostfeld recorded numbers as high or higher in any year since his work began. Reasons for the increase may include warmer weather during the winter and fragmented ecosystems where mice and their predators live.
