Communing with nature while on the run isn’t just good for your body—it’s great for your brain. A recent article published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that exercising in a forest or park (as opposed to an urban environment) resulted in decreased “neural activity in the subgenual prefrontal cortex”—the area of the brain linked to depression and mental illness. Trail seekers also self-reported lower levels of rumination (aka spinning thoughts associated with anxiety ). The takeaway? If you want to find peace, go wild.
