Father Keith McClellan, pastor of my home church in Long Beach, Indiana, offers some of the most interesting homilies. For many sermons by other priests, my mind drifts away after a few minutes, but Father Keith invariably holds my attention. Sunday, he talked about 7-Up. He began by reminiscing about his boyhood, a pleasant memory of his mother offering him 7-Up when he was sick, admonishing him to sip the drink, not gulp it down. From that, he morphed to Madison Avenue: the Mad Men who in the rebellious 1960s came up with a slogan for 7-Up, which had been losing market shares to the cola drinks: Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola. These advertising geniuses dubbed 7-Up, The UnCola. That identified the beverage as being something different (and better) than the standard cola drinks of the time.
