Q: Why do runners tend to get slower with age? A:

I would sincerely appreciate your advice on a problem, which is affecting me and other old guys. I have run 100+ marathons, now age 70, and my leg muscles now get so sore at 12-14 miles into a marathon that I end up doing a run/walk for the last 10 miles. This soreness is severe enough to limit me to actually running only about 60-70 percent of a marathon. My times have deteriorated from 4:10s to 5:00+ in the last year. I am not overtrained. In fact I may not be running enough to accomplish my goal (which is 4:25 for Boston qualifying). In the last five races, my leg muscles have been the limiting factor. What would cause this problem? I know everything changes as I age, but this is totally unexpected. Is this why age group numbers are so small from 70 on? Am I on the way to learning why old guys quit? Any ideas?
