You're no doubt well aware of how a good workout can melt away the day's stress. But what happens to that post-workout feeling of calmness if new stresses arrive? According to a study published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise , you'll still have lower levels of anxiety than if you had encountered the new stress after being sedentary. Researchers at the University of Maryland enlisted 37 adults to look at a variety of images after two conditions--once after sitting for 30 minutes, once after riding an exercise bike moderately hard for 30 minutes (about the same level of intensity as a run several seconds per mile slower than marathon pace). Before the half hour of sitting or working out, the subjects' anxiety levels were measured, and then measured again 15 minutes after the half hour of sitting or working out.
