How stretching affects the way you run:

Following the blog on when to stretch I just came across a study from earlier this year that I hadn't seen before, which has a few interesting wrinkles. It was published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research by a group from the University of Tampa. The goal of the study was to assess how static stretching affects performance in a relatively short running test – in this case, it was an uphill one-mile run on a treadmill at a 5% incline. The reason for this distance is that previous studies have found that stretching can worsen running (and cycling) economy and performance, but the effect seems to wear off after 5-10 minutes of activity. The subjects were 10 male NCAA cross-country runners, each of whom ran the test with and without stretching.
