WHAT GOT ME GOING: I was getting close to retirement, and I’d smoked for 45 years. I smoked 2½ packs a day. I’d seen so many people who had worked all their lives and now they couldn’t enjoy what was left of it because they hadn’t taken care of themselves. I wanted to be able to live a little bit and stop smoking. Running gave me something else to focus on. When you put your shoes on and take off running, and find that you can’t, you don’t want to sit down and light another cigarette. I had attempted to run years ago, but I’d finish a run and then I’d go in and light another cigarette. You can’t maintain both lifestyles. SECRET OF MY SUCCESS: It was one little benchmark at a time.
