Top 5 tips to nail a 5k race:

Five kilometres is a pretty long way to run, and an admirable goal for someone just climbing off the couch. Once conquered, it’s often left behind for the more talked-about (and, on the face of it, more impressive) distances, 10K and upwards, but it is worth revisiting. “I like the 5K because the recovery from each race is quick enough that you can get stuck into another one two or three weeks later,” says Ben Barwick, coach with Full Potential . “You can see progression in three or four weeks. And the speed that you gain over the shorter distance is carried through to the longer events, so if you consider yourself a marathon runner, the fact that you can run a 5K 20 or 30 seconds faster is going to have a knock-on effect for the training you’ll do later in the year.” Targeting 5K as key race isn’t easy, though.
