What's the best long run training distance for half marathoners?

Here’s the way I look at the question. In the marathon, most everyone manages to go 6 miles farther than the physiological bonking point—about 20 miles—that represents the upper long-run limit in many marathon training plans . So let’s look at the half marathon through a similar lens. Should it be possible to go 6 miles farther than a nonphysiological limiting point—7 miles? I don’t see why not. Especially when you consider that hydration and muscle fatigue are much lesser problems in the half marathon than the full marathon. Getting from 7 miles to 13 miles has got to be a lot easier than getting from 20 miles to 26 miles. Don’t you think? You just have to slow down a little. Of course, first-timers don’t readily accept this sort of analysis. Lacking confidence, they think they should do a long run of 10 miles—half of the marathoner’s 20-miler—if not 12 or 13 miles.
