A 12-year-old completed the Fargo Marathon five weeks after the sudden death of his father.

“All of my running buddies kept saying, ‘You can do it, it’ll be good for you,’ just [giving me] positive support.” Tyler told Runner’s World by phone. Instead of doing a long run of 18–20 miles as he intended, Hagensen’s longest training run was 13 or 14 miles. But he managed to finish the 26.2-mile race in 6:06:08, happy that he decided to run. “You get pretty, pretty exhausted at like mile 23 and it’s like everything hurts when you run. It’s kind of a good feeling—to me, anyways, maybe not for some,” Hagensen said. “If I would have trained more, I definitely could have gotten a way better time. I was happy. My goal, because of the missed training, was just to finish.” Tammy Hagensen, Tyler’s mother, said that Tyler has always loved being active.
