Two U.S. distance runners are vying for gold at the Special Olympics:

Distance runners Karen Dickerson and Alex Guild are two of the most accomplished athletes of the 300 American competitors. They'll both race the half marathon on Saturday, the final day of competition of the Games. Over the course of eight days, 7,000 athletes from 177 countries have competed in dozens of events in Los Angeles, the first American venue for the Special Olympics World Games since 1999. Last weekend, Dickerson, 29, a veteran marathoner from Springfield, Virginia, and three-time World Games competitor, ran 44:53 in the 10,000 meters, winning a silver medal. In the half marathon, she's already got a gold medal from the 2011 Games in Athens, and is hoping to podium again on Saturday.
