Runners who had caffeine one hour before an eight-mile run improved their times by an average of 23.8 seconds, in a study reported in the Journal of Sports Science. For maximum benefit, lower your intake by one cup a day, take 10 days off, then reintroduce before a race, says performance nutritionist Drew Price.
