Q: Can I run a marathon with one kidney? A:

MJ asks: I had a kidney removed when I was eight weeks old. Over the past two years, I have started running and I really enjoy it. I just signed up for my first marathon, but I am I’m worried about whether this is a health risk for me. I finished a 20-miler and cramped up pretty bad even though I kept myself hydrated the night before and throughout the race. Any advice? It is not unusual for people with one kidney to participate in sports. I had the opportunity to be the medical director for the National Kidney Foundation Transplant Games at the University of Minnesota in 2003. At that event, there were many people competing with only one transplanted kidney. The usual issue with a single-kidney athlete is the risk of trauma in collision sports. Hopefully, that will not be an issue in your marathon.
