Q: Is it OK to split up my long runs? A:

Lee asks: I'm training for my first marathon. My question concerns my long runs. Can I split them up? For example, when my schedule says to run 20 miles, can I run 10 miles on Saturday and 10 miles on Sunday? Or, do I need to run all 20 miles at one time? My short answer? You need to run all 20 miles at one time. The marathon is 26.2 miles—all at one time. Long runs are the single most essential aspect of marathon training, especially for a first-timer. Long runs offer many benefits, but of primary importance is endurance. They strengthen the heart and respiratory muscles, stimulate the development of more blood capillary beds, and condition muscles, tendons, and ligaments for more miles.
