Slowing down to a stroll can speed your fitness:

Frank Deleo's slight, sinewy frame tells the story of a life on the road. At 59, the 115-pound Brooklyn native could be mistaken for a man half his age. He can often be found on the 3.35-mile drive that wraps around Prospect Park, in the heart of Brooklyn, gliding along either barefoot or in his running sandals. He maintains an easy pace – 9 to 10 minutes per mile – but he loops the park over and over again. At his peak, in the late 1980s and early '90s, Deleo won numerous ultra-marathons and twice placed in the top five at the 100-mile national championships. And he's still at it. Deleo's longevity, and his endurance, may have less to do with his steadfast dedication to running than with something far more prosaic. Like most New Yorkers, Deleo walks a lot and always has.
