From the May 2012 issue of Runner’s World A glass of milk at bedtime can do more than help you sleep In a study published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise , 16 young men were given a bedtime beverage containing either 40g of casein protein or no protein. During the night, the casein protein was effectively digested, resulting in a rapid rise in bloodstream amino acids and increased whole-body protein synthesis rates. Researchers suggest that consuming protein at bedtime may be useful to runners for building muscle and recovery, and perhaps even to older adults wanting to reduce age-related muscle-loss.
