GEAR CHECK: This low-profile traction system can keep you upright in the snow and ice.

With the Northeast receiving a healthy dose of winter weather, this seemed an appropriate time to try the Kahtoola NANOspikes ($49.95, kahtoola.com ) traction gear on snowy and icy roads around the Runner’s World offices. At first glance the rubber harness that you place over your shoe looks basic. Ten tungsten carbide studs are the spikes for each foot, designed to help you dig into unseen black ice or slippery roads. The spike length measures just 0.21 inches, but each one is built within a stepped and tiered rubber “cleat” that’s intended to provide additional shock absorption. On a couple test runs, we found the best performance in lower amounts of snow. When the spikes have a good chance of connecting with the ground underneath ice and slush, the bite is great, allowing you to breeze comfortably along as you would on any run without changing your natural gait.
