A new study says it's OK to walk a little during your next marathon:

Don't feel bad if you take the occasional walk break during your first marathon–you're not hurting yourself or your time as much as you think. Runners who took planned walking breaks throughout their races ran times comparable to those who ran the entire distance but reported having less fatigue and muscle pain at the finish line, a recent study in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport reports. Researchers studied 42 recreational runners from Germany who ran 6 to 12 miles per week prior to beginning the study and agreed to train for and run their first marathon. The participants trained for three months and were divided into two groups–those who would run the entire marathon and those who would take a one-minute walking break every 2.5K (roughly 1.5 miles) throughout the race. Those who took walking breaks ran about 4:14 on average, while those who ran the whole way...
