The mountain has a long history with winter sports, having played host to the downhill events at the 1980 Winter Olympics; nearby Lake Placid was home of those games (and setting for the Miracle on Ice ) as well as the 1932 Winter Games. Even after the snow is long gone, endurance athletes show up to test themselves against the mountain. Every year, the Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway, an 8-mile ribbon of asphalt that opened in 1936 and twists upward for 3,500 vertical feet, hosts bike and foot races to the mountain's summit.
