More people are participating in all manner of running events, from marathons to color runs, than ever before, according to the latest state-of-sport report from Running USA . A record 15.5 million people crossed the finish line at running events in 2012, continuing the sport’s massive growth. Except for 2003, a new record number of finishers has been set every year over the last 20 years. Since 2000, the number of finishers has increased by 80%, according to the report. Men's and women's participation numbers both hit new highs in 2012. More than 6.8 million men crossed the finish line, but women trumped that figure, accounting for 8.6 million finishers, or 56% of the total field, the highest percentage recorded since Running USA began documenting the sport’s rise in the mid-1990s.
