Q: Has the marathon boom peaked? A:

This might sound incongruous a week after demand for 2013 Chicago Marathon registration was so strong that the registration site crashed, but at least one industry insider thinks the marathon boom of the last several years may have peaked. Writing in the industry newsletter Road Race Management , Phil Stewart analyzed large-event finisher data from select 2011 and 2012 races and reached this conclusion: "After nearly a decade of strong increases in marathon and half-marathon participation, this data appears to indicate that a peak may have been reached. This could be due to a saturation of these events, meaning that the number of participants could still be on the rise but are spreading out over an increasing number of events, or it could mean that the number of participants is declining."
