How to get a caffeine boost without swallowing: the latest mouth-rinse study.

Over the last few years, there have been a bunch of studies about the performance boost that results from rinsing your mouth with a carbohydrate drink (and then spitting it out). The evidence suggests that our mouths have previously unknown carb sensors (totally independent of taste) that connect directly to our brains and in some way signal that it's okay to go faster. Now a new study in the journal Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism , by researchers in Britain, Sweden and New Zealand, adds a bunch of new wrinkles. It's quite a complicated study with a whole bunch of implications, but perhaps the most interesting is that rinsing your mouth with a caffeine drink (and then spitting it out) can also give you a performance boost, through a separate set of mouth sensors.
