Dread the 'mill? Here's why you shouldn't:

We call the room our torture chamber. Three walls are cinder-block, painted white; the fourth is merely a partition that separates the mill from the cars. Hanging on the walls are a photo of Uta Pippig winning the Boston Marathon ("I thought that was you," our daughter would later tell me. "I wish," I'd reply), a Corporate Challenge bib autographed by Grete Waitz, and all my marathon medals dangling from a key rack. The room suffers the vagaries of weather—freezing in the winter, humid in the summer, which is bad for the mill (kerrchunk). It lives beneath our bedrooms, and the beep-beepbeeeeeep of it turning on and revving up and the thump-thump-thump of my footsteps are enough to wake a sensitive child. My aim is to run while she sleeps (which I keep telling her), but I have, on occasion, logged miles while she "reads" a book in her Dora armchair, where she's close enough...
