Brains of Regular Exercisers Should Age Better

By Scott Douglas The brains of endurance-trained middle-aged people show evidence of greater plasticity and metabolic efficiency than the brains of healthy but sedentary middle-aged people, a difference that should lead to better brain function later in life, according to a study to be published in the journal Brain Topography . Researchers at the University of Texas in Austin compared the brains of 28 endurance-trained people ages 40-65 to those of 27 sedentary in the same age group. The endurance-trained people said they ran and/or cycled at least four days a week. The researchers measured concentrations of neural markers such as N-acetyl-aspartate, creatine and choline in the subjects, and also assessed their overall cognitive functioning.
