Running Boom Just Keeps on Booming

Last year there were 13.9 million finishers of U.S. road races, 23,000 U.S. road races and a female participation rate of 55%, all of which are record figures, according to Running USA's 2012 State of the Sport report. That made 2011 the eighth consecutive year in which total race finishers set a record. (And no, Michael Wardian didn't account for half of those numbers.) The half marathon continued to drive the record numbers, with 1.6 million finishers, up 16% from the previous year. That said, the 5K remained the most popular distance, with 5.2 million finishers, or almost 38% of all U.S. road race finishers.
