New research shows just how risky fatigued running can be.

By Scott Douglas Deteriorating running form because of fatigue can increase your risk for a stress fracture, suggests a study published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise . Researchers in Northern Ireland had trained runners do a series of short runs while the researchers measured biomechanical variables like peak rear foot eversion (basically, pronation of the heel) and vertical loading rate (how much force their body absorbed vertically upon landing) that are associated with developing a stress fracture in the tibia, the inner, larger of the two shin bones. The subjects then did a 20-minute tempo run at their lactate threshold pace, or roughly the pace they could hold for an hour.
