Excess Training Leads to Mental Decline

By Scott Douglas This gives new meaning to "training stupid hard": A French study has found that endurance athletes who are "overreaching," or under an abnormally heavy training load, aren't as mentally sharp as when they're at their normal training volume. The study, published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports , had 11 endurance athletes double their training volume for two weeks, followed by a taper week at half their normal volume. On the basis of their poorer performance on tests at maximum effort and 85% effort, the subjects were said to be overreaching when in the double-volume weeks. That the subjects were physically exhausted when training twice as much as usual isn't surprising.
