As was expected, the sprinters covered a lot more ground (an average of 8.24 meters, or roughly 27 feet) than the middle-distance runners (an average of 6.59 meters, or roughly 21.6 feet) and the relatively unpowerful long-distance runners (an average of 5.61 meters, or roughly 18.4 feet). The more intriguing finding was that, within each group, better performance on the jump test aligned with better race times. While you would expect that to be the case with the sprinters, it's worth noting that it was true with the long-distance crew as well. Those whose legs could produce more explosive power were faster in a race lasting several minutes.
