“I’m cramping up all over. I’m not going to last too much longer,” Ian said 6 miles into the California International Marathon. He was talking to Sean, Jeff, Zach and myself, as it was all of our plans to help each other throughout the race with the hope that one of us would be the eventual winner. At the time there were still 20+ guys in our lead pack, all of us wanting as much shelter as possible from the storming rain and 30 mph winds. We were already soaked to the bone, but thankful that it was 55 degrees out so we were not cold. With 20 miles left in the race Ian’s assessment reminded me of how often I feel bad during a race when physically I should be fine. Although Ian, Zach and I had trained for the New York City Marathon, we were running this race as a contingency after Hurricane Sandy brought destruction to New York.
