South Africa's Comrades Marathon ultra fills with 18,000 runners:

The entry cap for the 2013 running of South Africa's Comrades Marathon has been reached, SuperSport.com reports . Since registration opened on September 1, 18,000 runners have signed up for the 89-kilometer road race. The 2013 race, scheduled for June 2, will be an "up" year, meaning the route will gain in elevation as it goes from Durban to Pietermaritzburg. "The enthusiasm and desire to run the Comrades Marathon has reached record levels, not only in South Africa, but across the globe," race director Johan Van Staden said. While mass participation in the world's most famous ultra is healthier than ever, the elite side of the race has been troubled recently. This year's winner, Ludwick Mamabolo, failed a post-race drug test, as did Lephetesang Adoro, who placed seventh in the 2012 race.
