Are races becoming like airlines? Phil Latter argues they are:

Mike Underhill considers himself to be something of a knowledgeable runner and businessman. A Milwaukee-based owner of a small investment company who has completed 25 marathons across the U.S. and Europe, Underhill frequently mixes road racing and business trips. Earlier this month, he looked forward to speaking at a pension fund conference in San Diego, then running along the Pacific Coast at a nearby Veteran’s Day half-marathon. “Like a lot of distance racers, my running races are my source of fulfillment and a way of staying centered in a stressful life full of challenges,” Underhill says. That stress level increased when he received an email stating that race-day packet pickup would be available for a “late fee” of $10. Staying 12 miles from the race site, Underhill saw two options: rent a car for $100 and pick up the packet at the expo the night before his competition...
