England’s women narrowly missed out on a gold medal following a thrilling match against Egypt in the WSF World Team Championship final. Second seeds Egypt fought back from a game down to upset England, the pre-tournament favourites and take the title after three enthralling matches. The English team got off to a good start when Alison Waters beat Nour El Sherbini in the first ever meeting between the two world top ten players. Waters, ranked four in the world, took the first game – but the Egyptian underdog, ranked four places lower, fought back to open a 2/1 lead. However Waters, 28, used her experience to recover the deficit, eventually overcoming her 17-year-old opponent 11-5, 8-11, 9-11, 11-3, 11-5 to put England ahead.
