But did those junk miles do me any good? Would increasing your weekly mileage from 20 to 30 to 40 or more make you a better runner, or will doing so simply increase your risk of injury? Are junk miles like junk food, burning empty calories with little training effect? Research shows that so-called junk miles can provide meaningful benefits. For example, one study at the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse by Carl Foster, Ph.D., showed that runners’ performance improved when they incorporated recovery days that featured very slow runs that some might call junk miles. “You need true recovery days in order to allow the real training to work,” says Foster. Another study, conducted at the University of Georgia by Michael Breus and Patrick O’Connor, Ph.D., demonstrated that exercising even at 40 percent of maximal capacity (a very easy level of effort) significantly lowered anxiet...
