Essential tips for volunteering at shelter-dog running programs.

“I really do think we’re part of the reason dogs are getting adopted,” said Adria Eichner, who helps coordinate the Delco Dog Trotters program and provides training for volunteers. “We’re giving dogs another skill they might not have had, and it makes them more marketable.” (Hear more from the Dog Trotters program on The Runner’s World Show in the player below.) Dogs can display kennel frustration or behavioral challenges because of a lack of space or lower levels of activity throughout the day. Running programs can help alleviate that anxiety—helping pooches present their true selves toward potential adopters. “And once you get them home, they’re not bouncing off the walls and can settle into a sense of normalcy,” Eichner said.
