Here's yet another way running helps slow aging.

The images showed that the older triathlete’s leg had about as much muscle (the dark material in the images) as that of the younger triathlete, while the sedentary man’s leg had far less muscle. That’s how we often think about age-related muscle loss: the muscle is simply disappearing if you don’t use it. In truth, though, the picture is far more complex, and involves changes not just in the muscle but also in the nerves that activate the muscle and the connections between them. A new study in the Journal of Applied Physiology, led by Geoff Power of the University of Guelph, along with collaborators at McGill University and several other universities, takes a deeper look at the muscle properties of elite masters track and field athletes with an average age of 80, and finds some remarkable adaptations.
