The closer you get to the net, the more angles you have at your disposal. You can play those angles to your advantage no matter how quick your opponent is, but it takes practice at match speed to feel good about making those types of shots. This is a very different sort of game than your usual power-based baseline action, after all. Start to mentally prepare to find your optimum spot for good volley position right before your opponent hits the ball, and from the balls of your feet, you'll be able to react to the shot. The foundation of strong play at the net comes from practice session after practice session. As with any tennis shot you want to master, you simply have to work on it.
