Asbel Kiprop of Kenya wins third straight 1500-meter title: #Beijing2015

Japanese runners Ayuko Suzuki and Misaki Onishi (who ended up ninth and 14th, respectively) led through the first two kilometers of the women's 5,000 in 6:06.26, on pace to a 15:15 finish. Ayana, the 2013 bronze medalist, then began to drop in 68-second laps. Dibaba and Kenya’s Mercy Cherono, in single file behind her, were the only ones who went with her. Perhaps confident in her kick, Dibaba never made a move to threaten Ayana’s lead. By 3,400 meters, Ayana’s margin grew steadily, and Dibaba, in her fifth race of the meet, was clearly defeated. Cherono faded to fifth, a well-beaten 15:01.36, behind countrywoman Viola Kibiwot, who was fourth in 14:46.16. The top seven places went to Ethiopians and Kenyans.
