6 steps to becoming a more successful over-40 runner:

I have been running for more than 30 years and coaching for more than 10 years. Whenever I speak to any new masters athlete, I often hear the same stories of mistakes that have been made. Most of the time, I hear how lack of preparation led to injury or disappointment. If you follow these simple steps, your fall running schedule will be more enjoyable, and ultimately more successful: Step 1: Plan a training schedule. Use a calendar or simple Excel spreadsheet to select a race. Then work backwards from that date with key goals or milestones to measure your progress. For example, if your goal is to run 4 hours in the marathon, mark your calendar 3–4 weeks out with an intermediate goal, such as running sub 1:55 in a half marathon race or workout.
