NEWBIES: RW editors share their best advice for new runners.

Jeff Dengate, Shoes & Gear Editor Age: 36 Running highlights: Most recently, competing at the US Snowshoe Championships. Best piece of advice I ever got was... Don't be intimidated by your local independent running store. Go there and be prepared to spend a little time with the staff. Be honest about your experience (or lack of) and what you hope to accomplish—whether it's to mix in a little running on your daily walk or to work your way up to a 5K this summer. The staff there is very knowledgeable and have likely helped countless runners just like you. Finally, don't worry too much about technology or brand names in shoes. The staff will make recommendations for models that are likely to work best for you. Try them on and jog/walk on their treadmill to make sure they fit right and feel comfortable.
