A street in Manhattan will be named for running pioneer Ted Corbitt:

On August 16, 228th Street and Broadway in New York City will be co-named Ted Corbitt Way, in honor of a seminal figure in modern American distance running. The street is in the Marble Hill neighborhood, the northernmost part of Manhattan, where Corbitt lived for much of his life. Corbitt made many important contributions to American running. In 1952, he became the first African-American to run on the U.S. Olympic marathon team. He was 33 years old when he ran in the Games; at the time, this was considered an advanced age for an elite distance runner. When he ran his marathon personal best of 2:26:44 in 1958, he was the third fastest American in history at the distance. But marathons were at the low end of Corbitt's range. A pioneer of lifelong high-mileage training, Corbitt was one of the world's best ultramarathoners in the 1960s. In his 50s, he set U.S. records for 100 ...
