Q: Is heat stroke or cardiac arrest a greater threat to runners? A:

A team of cardiologists from Tel Aviv, Israel, has just published an eye-popping paper in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. In it, they reported that life-threatening runner injuries in their own specialty–the heart–are far less common than those from heat stroke . “In our cohort [of 137,000 runners who competed in two Tel Aviv road races from 2007 through 2013], for every cardiac adverse event, there were 10 serious events related to heat stroke,” they wrote. They also reported two deaths from heat stroke, but none from cardiac arrest. These results reverse the findings of previous studies, which have focused on heart-related deaths and found heat stroke a lesser risk.
