Running by your body can also help you avoid the mental barriers we sometimes place on ourselves on race day. I coached a runner that struggled with race day anxiety. She would hit her marks in training, but on race day, she’d develop anxiety as the race evolved. She’d go into a race with a set pacing plan, and when she ran faster than that pace, she’d tighten up and get nervous. When she ran slower than her plan, she would get anxiety and get in a negative zone. Both situations created a roller coaster of negative emotions that elevated her heart and breathing rates, ultimately ending up in a less than her best performance.
