The Curious Case of the Miscalibrated Treadmill: a running mystery with a surprise ending!
There was a massive ice storm in Toronto last week, and my wife is seven months pregnant. So, even though I like to think of myself as a running-weather tough guy, she and I have been doing some treadmill running lately. Our building has an exercise room with eight treadmills -- six older ones and two shiny new ones that are always the first ones taken. The first four or five times we ran indoors, I ended up on the older treadmills, which seemed to work fine. While I don't have a huge amount of treadmill experience, I quickly got comfortable with the routine, figured out what paces were comfortable to start out with and how much I could expect to accelerate during the run, and so on.
