STUDY: Runners seeking peak performance should make seeing a dentist a priority. Here's why:

Runners and other athletes seeking peak performance should make seeing a dentist a priority, suggests a recent study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine . The study evaluated the oral health of 302 Olympians during the 2012 London Games. The athletes were primarily from North and South America, Europe and Africa, and were drawn from 25 sports. The results showed a high level of poor dental health. Fifty-five percent of the athletes had tooth decay, 45% showed signs of enamel erosion, and 15% had periodontitis, a gum infection that affects soft tissue and bone around the teeth. About a quarter of the athletes reported that their dental issues lowered their quality of life, and 18% said it affected their training and performance, primarly due to lost practice time.
