Wrong Turn Leads to Marathon Win

From the sometimes-the-best-laid-plans department comes a happy tale of a race gone awry. Meredith Fitzmaurice of Belle River, Ontario was cruising to what she thought would be a sub-1:28 half marathon at last Sunday’s Run for Heroes Marathon in Ontario when it occurred to her she should have already finished, the Montreal Gazette reports . Fitzmaurice, 34, sensed she’s missed a turn, and once a bike official confirmed it, she decided to stick to the marathon route for 20 miles. It would count, she reasoned, as a bonus long run for her build up to her first marathon in October. But as she scanned the road ahead, she counted nine men and no women, according to the Gazette .
