The drop in performance usually attributed to dehydration in the heat might be all in our heads, suggests a new study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine , leading the researchers to conclude that encouraging endurance athletes to drink according to their sweat rate may be misguided. The study, conducted by researchers in New Zealand, found no performance differences among 10 cyclists who were either fully hydrated or dehydrated to -2% or -3% of body mass during a laboratory time trial in hot conditions (91 degrees Fahrenheit, 40% humidity). Previous research suggests performance begins to suffer at -2% dehydration.
