New runners tend to lean forward at the waist and pronate more as they tire, both of which could increase injury risk, according to research published in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport . The research by Dutch and Scottish scientists is important because it shows what happens to new runners ' form in conditions close to a typical hard run. Many studies on running form are done when the subjects are fresh. Similarly, many real-world decisions based on one's running form , including what shoes to wear, are done when runners aren't tired. For the study, 17 new runners did a workout on a treadmill. They started by walking, and then switched to running as the treadmill's speed was increased every two minutes.
