Boston Marathon Memorial to be Removed Tuesday

The makeshift memorial that sprung up in Copley Square in the days and weeks following the bombings at the Boston Marathon will be taken down on Tuesday, Mayor Thomas M. Menino has announced. As the Boston Globe reports , Menino sent a letter to survivors and victims’ families informing them of the city’s plans to move all the stuffed animals, photographs, shoes and other items left as offerings of condolence and solidarity to the city’s archives in West Roxbury. “It is my hope,” Menino wrote in the letter, “that the respectful closing of the temporary memorial will help us all look to the future.” Though the memorial still receives a steady volume of visitors, Menino decided the time was right to remove the articles after talking with survivors and victims’ family members, Katharine Lusk, one of the mayor’s advisers, told the Globe .
